What are 1-Dash & 1-Dial Domains?

1-Dash-logo 1-Dash & 1-Dial Explained

These domains are valuable because they contain hyphens.

HELLO - they look like phone numbers...

An example using the word 'Pizza'

1-Pizza.com
1-Pizza.mobi
1-74992.com    (74992 spells Pizza on a phone keypad)
1-74992.mobi

The 1- mimics a phone number so it's a great memory trigger for people using a phone to connect to the web.

The crust thickens because Pizza Companies will be challenged if they didn't buy pizza.com or pizza.net. 1-Pizza.com looks like a phone number, makes sense to humans and is a viable marketing solution for a mobile internet pizza sales website.

Mobile Pizza Domains of Interest:

Explanations of 1-Dash and 1-Dial Domains for Literal Learners

1-Dash
1-Dash Domain names consist of common words and look like phone numbers.
1-Pizza.com is an example of a common word, 1-Dash Domain.
1-Dash domains have a built in mobile marketing kick because of the 'phone number memory hook'.

1-Dial
1-Dial Domain names consist of numbers that are converted from a phone keypad and look like phone numbers because they start with the number 'One' followed by a hyphen.

1-Dial domains also have a built in mobile marketing kick but with a twist; the number is translated on a phone keypad.

1-74992.com (Pizza) is an example of a 1-Dial Domain

Numbers That Work
Numbers That Work Domain names are created by using the numbers on a phone keypad to ‘spell’ the words used in a domain name.

  • Numbers (6862377.com)
  • Don't Call Me (3668225563.com)

Target Market:

Mobile Pizza Sales from Small Screen Devices like Phones and PDAs

Why these 4 Pizza Domain Names are so Valuable

Future Pizza sales will be to mobile surfers that text on small screen devices.

All the domains look like phone numbers because of the number 1 and a hyphen

  • Skip the Goog step - Texters will type-in direct
    • 4 domains, as a set will work      together to dominate mobile pizza sales

  • Breaks keyword lock by       pizza.com
  • Built in memory trigger to      phone numbers
    • Transition surfers to       mobile(dot mobi)

    • Maintain dot com search rank

Synergy => 4 vs. 1

This is a rare opportunity to acquire 4 domains as a set that can take the #2 slot in search results for desk-bound customers and # 1 for mobile customers because of the mobile memory hook. This strategy provides the ability to compete now with a position ready for mobility later.

1-Pizza.com vs Pizza.net, The Real #2 Domain to Pizza.com

Pizza.net Marketing
Avis defined the rental car market to hold only 2 players; inserting themselves as the 'other' choice in rental cars. Followed by 'Avis tries harder' because they are #2.

It seems everyone has assumed that pizza.net (recent sale for $1.1M) is the next best option to pizza.com (recent sale $2.6M, $2,600,000)

Maybe not... pizza.net won't automatically load from a browser type-in of pizza!
Again validating why dot com domains are more valuable than domains with other extensions.

Thinking Outside the 'Pizza.com Box" - 1-Pizza.com Enters the Mix
It can be argued that logically, 1-pizza.com is worth more than pizza.net that just sold for $1.1M, the current 2nd best domain to pizza.com that just sold for $2.6M
  • It's a dot com
  • 1-pizza.com looks like a phone number and makes sense to a human
  • 1-Pizza.com shorter than 99% of domains containing the word pizza
  • Mobile memory hook
    • Interesting as Type-in traffic or a direct navigation domain

1-Pizza.com Makes Sense to Humans
Just as the marketing concept of "I (Heart) NY" took a double take, domains that look like phone numbers takes some exposure and a bit of getting used to. People we speak with really like it after admitting it took a minute to 'get their head around it".

1-Pizza.com Website Development or Use as a Shortcut
Developing 1-pizza.com as a new venture would be relatively easy but a new website wouldn't be necessary if you are already in the online pizza business; the domain could be forwarded to your current website and serve as a short, easy to remember shortcut for your customers that would be greatly appreciated in this age of long, hard to remember domain names.

1-Pizza.com is shorter and makes sense to people in a hurry for pizza....

Dot Com Stampede - Phase 2
Competition is brutal and with the internet, the dot com stampede made or broke many companies that failed to register domains vital to their business interests. Defensive registrations became important too.

Act Now: Before a Competitor Buys 1-Pizza.com
Thick or thin, if you own a pizza company, 1-pizza.com is an option to explore. Especially if you didn't buy pizza.com or pizza.net.

Pizza.com Auction Dough Rises to over $2 million

by Adam Strong in Categories: Domain Auction

Pizza.comThe top-tier one word domain name Pizza.com is up for sale on Sedo.com and attracting a lot of attention in early bidding. In just 2 days of bidding, the domain has already attracted bids in excess of $2 million . Twenty bidders have already placed bids on the auction which has 5 more days left. This is a stellar domain but at these price levels, Domain Name News would expect there to be “end user” (rather than speculator) bidding on this domain name.

Typically with online auctions, bids slowly come in over the first few days only to quickly elevate during the last few minutes as bidders wait to “snipe” the auction. If this trend holds true, the Pizza.com auction could push over $3 million becoming one of the top sales ever for Sedo.com and putting the domain in the upper bracket of  highest reported domain sales.  Sedo.com brokered the sale of Vodka.com in late 2006 for $3 million to Russian Standard Vodka.

Future Search Revenues will be in $Trillians

The battlelines are being drawn for the domain names that provide the entry points to search engine websites. Domain resale value is obvious with the recent sale (February 2008) of SearchEngines.com for $92,500

18 Search Domains Offered in a Group
1-Dash has an un-precendented portfolio of 18 domains being offered as a group. All leverage keywords relevant to 'search' and these domains do not need an owner's manual.

Besides who wants to type "SearchEngines.com" or "http://www.google.com/mobile/" ?

Because 1-Dash domains look like phone numbers, it's an obvious connection to mobile surfers.

Analysis: Value of Hyphens in Domain Names

Bucking Current Domain After-market Appraisal Values

If a domain name contains a hyphen right after the number one (1-) the domain looks like a phone number. If the intention is to connect with mobile users, the marketing value has to increase.

It follows that dot mobi domains will eventually be worth more than the dot com version of a 1-Dash or 1-Dial domain.

A 1-Dash Response to the Key Points of the following published opinions on the value of Hyphenated Domain Names:

e21
'easy to forget the hyphens'
=> mobile and phone are synonymous

TDNAM
'sought-after keywords' =>
Common words will define the 1-Dash  after-market
'popular names or phrases' => Common words lead to sales
'current trends' => mobile, mobile, mobile

Webmaster Stop
'domains with hyphens are easy to remember, spell and pronounce'
=> mobile and phone are synonymous
'Always use ".com" => spoken before dot mobi came into the picture

Note: Not one of the references mentions similarity to phone numbers as a criteria or as a way to create interest with mobile users.

Sources:
e21

Site: http://domains.e21.com/Hyphenated-domains

The main disadvantage is that it's too easy to forget the hyphens (dashes) when typing the domain name and to make errors, and most users will end up in your competitor's sites. It is also a pain, and users don't like to waste their time. Amateurs buy and register domain names with multiple hyphens, and they aggravate the easy errors user will make when trying to find them.

The professionals stick to domain names without hyphens, and get all the business, their normal traffic, plus the lost traffic generated by all the hyphenated domain names.

The Internet is very competitive and you either have the right domain names or you don't.

 Domain name length

Short domain names are easier for visitors to remember, and a short, catchy name is more likely to receive your preferred asking price.

Keywords
Domain names that include sought-after keywords generate more traffic and higher interest from potential buyers.

Name
Domains that include popular names or phrases, especially words or phrases that follow current trends, generate higher interest from potential buyers. Domain names must not infringe on third party trademarks.

Top-level domain (TLD)
The .com TLD is the most popular with buyers. Other TLDs, such as .org, might limit the versatility of the domain or imply a certain type of site resides on the domain. In some cases, a country code TLD (ccTLD) is better for domains, such as using a .fr ccTLD for a domain that contains French.

WebmasterStop

Site: http://www.webmasterstop.com/17.html

6) Should you or should you not use hyphens in your domain? Well, the jury is out on the question. While some Internet marketers will tell you that domains containing hyphens are difficult to remember, spell and pronounce, others will state that domains containing hyphens are, in fact, easy to remember, spell and pronounce. Go figure. Personally, I would feel that whether or not hyphens are helpful has to be determined on a case by case basis. However, if you register a domain containing hyphens, make sure that you also register the corresponding domain without the hyphens. Once you do that, you can simply redirect visitors from the domain without the hyphens to the domain with the hyphens.

7) Don't make your primary domain too long. Even though 67 character domains are a reality, exactly how many of your users will want to type a domain name like thisisanexampleofaverylargedomainname.com?

8) Always use ".com". If yours is a serious business site, avoid using domains ending in "nu" or "to". Your business will have little credibility if you do so. You can consider registering a ".net" domain, but since most people are familiar with ".com", it is better to stick to convention.

1-Dash Offers Domains for Sale by Industry Group

It is unprecedented to have the opportunity to acquire multiple domain names that 'capture' an entire industry. We came up with common words we felt would have significant marketing traction with mobile users and registered them in groups (and all the domains look like phone numbers)

People weren't leveraging multiple domains or doing 'defensive' registrations when they got a domain name for their business during the original dot com stampede. As competition for surfers climbs, so will the value of these domains. Normal Pay-Per-Click valuations don't apply because 1-Dash and 1-Dial Domains (1-Dash uses words after the 1- and 1-Dial uses numbers translated from a phone keypad after the 1- )have a built in memorability trigger that means something to mobile people.

Most of our domains are short (they fall into domainers terminology as N-LLL , N-LLLL or N-LLLLL)

The plot thickens...

    1-Pizza.com
    1-Pizza.mobi
    1-74992.com
    1-74992.mobi
(74992 spells Pizza on a phone keypad)

The 1- mimics a phone number so it’s a great memory trigger for people using a phone to connect to the web.

brandy domain namesSuppose
you are planning a website. You already know what it will be about and
now what? Yeah, you need to name it. And that’s where you first get
into trouble. You might want your site name to contain your main keyword
and most obviously you find that all the hot catchy names are already
taken. So what to do? Here are some helpful tips and resources:

1. Use already branded ideas (one of my favorites):

seomoz.com (Dmoz.com)
porntube.com (Youtube.com)

The obvious advantage of this approach lies in adding a fixed
positive association to your domain name. Consider this, everyone knows
and trusts Dmoz and thus by adding -moz to your domain name you get people to trust your new website.

2. Make up new words by adding suffixes:

2.1. Add -ster (very popular): catster.com, dogster.com, friendster.com
2.2. Add a verb forming suffix -ize/-ise: fashionising.com, colourize.com
2.3. Add Latin adjectival suffix -cus: eventicus.com
2.4. Use adjective suffixes
-matic: podomatic.com (podcasts)
-ful: eventful.com
-able: fundable.com

3. An advanced version of the above two: take a well known website name, add your keyword and add a suffix - gamediggity.com

1-Dash Domain Owners May Strike Gold

If they realize that the domains they own look like phone numbers and follow our 1-Dash Naming convention of a common word, beginning with a one and a hyphen (1-)

Because current owners of domains that look like phone numbers were probably registering common words to use as parked domains or PPC (pay per click) to generate revenue, they may or may not have realized the domains could have marketing value to mobile users.

Domain appraisers are either oblivious to the notion that criteria can change or have their collective heads buried in the sand.

If it looks like a phone number and walks like a domain, it Quacks, "Mobile, Mobile, Mobile!!"

Our Extended post contains a list of over 100 common words we discovered registered as 1-Dash Domains during our research and analysis.

Some of the most interesting domains include:

Vote            1-Vote.com       http://www.1-vote.com
Team           1-Team.com     http://www.1-team.com
Plan            1-Plan.com        http://www.1-plan.com
AAA             1-AAA.com        http://www.1-AAA.com

Our research and analysis includes a possible future where 1-Dash dot mobi domains may be worth more in the domain after-market than their 1-Dash dot com cousins because dot com may remain a  'desk-bound' user phenomena and society is moving to mobility.

See our Extended post for the list of over 100 common words registered as 1-Dash Domains:

A 1-Dash Domain and the Quickorder app would keep everyone hooked on Starbucks

A 1-Dash Domain is memorable by anyone on a phone (mobile or desk-bound) because of the built in memory key, "A 1-Dash Domain looks like a phone number." So, no shortcut or bookmark is needed.

Our take is that any coffee house would benefit from 1-Dash or 1-Dial Domains like:

Word     1-Dash.com Domain            1-Dash.mobi Domain
java       1-java.com                      1-java.mobi

Keyword Java:
Short, common word used instead of the longer word 'coffee', trendy, easy to remember, domain looks like a phone number, memory hook for mobile users,  could be forwarded or point to whatever ridiculously long url users are expected to remember.

Word     1-Dash.com Domain            1-Dash.mobi Domain
café       1-cafe.com                       1-cafe.mobi

Keyword Café:
Short, common word used instead of the longer word 'restaurant', trendy, easy to remember, domain looks like a phone number, memory hook for mobile users, could be forwarded or point to whatever ridiculously long url users are expected to remember.

You're already well aware that Apple and Starbucks are buddy-buddy on at least some level, but this application would really cement their friendship. Quickorder, as you can probably imagine, would enable iPod touch users to swing by their local Starbucks, order up their favorite drink and avoid a good deal of that always questionable human interaction. Granted, what you're peering at above is still a mockup for now, but it's brimming with potential, no? Hit up the read link for lots more pics.

Any Realtor would be jealous because if it quacks Mobile, Mobile, Mobile it's the best location, location, location on the internet.
